    At the Digital Transformation World (DTW Ignite) event in Copenhagen, BT's Chief Security and Networks Officer Howard Watson, and Vodafone's Chief Technology Officer Scott Petty delivered strong warnings about the growing cybersecurity dangers posed by artificial intelligence—particularly deepfakes, cleverly manipulated chatbots, and the forensic difficulties they present.

    Watson disclosed that BT has experienced a staggering 160%–170% increase in security events over the past year—equating to nearly 2,000 incidents every second. "The threat level we're seeing—from both criminal and state-sponsored actors—is unprecedented," he said. He emphasized the company's shift in security mindset: from building perimeter defenses to operating under the assumption that "somebody is already inside," focusing on rapid detection and ejection of threats. He stressed the importance of cross-industry cooperation with partners such as the NCSC to stay ahead.

    Adding to the alarms, Vodafone's CTO Scott Petty noted how AI is rendering it nearly impossible to distinguish external attackers from legitimate internal users, especially around intelligent systems such as chatbots. "The chatbot answers as if the intruder is internal, because it thinks it's talking to an employee," he explained, underlining how dangerous AI-empowered tools have become.

    As solutions, Watson advocated for vendor consolidation and platform-based security. Too many third-party tools make it harder to maintain integrated, coherent defenses. "We need consolidation," he urged, urging leading firms like Microsoft, Cisco, and Palo Alto to develop more versatile ecosystems that telecoms can tailor to their needs. Notably, Cisco's $28 billion acquisition of Splunk—boosted by AI ambitions—helped its security revenue jump 54% in a single quarter.

    AI education and governance also featured prominently in the conversation. Vodafone is pursuing a policy of "secure by design," implementing pan-European ethical AI governance and carefully limiting access to external LLMs, while exploring cybersecurity chatbot assistants for employee support. BT, meanwhile, has created an AI Center of Excellence offering both theoretical and hands-on training, positioning AI not as a replacement but as a "human co-pilot." Watson warned about fearing a future where technicians forget the value of physical network knowledge—his team still needs engineers who know how routers by Cisco, Nokia, or Juniper work.

    Vodafone's Petty emphasized a more pragmatic approach: "Don't ignore the risks—but don't stop focusing on applications with low risk and high value. Velocity matters in telco transformation." He's credited AI in reducing incident rates by 50% and streamlining backend systems. Plus, AI tools now summarize chatbot interactions and aid product recommendations—underlining the performance benefits alongside the risks.

    Together, BT and Vodafone's warnings reflect a growing industry awareness: AI systems offer powerful promise—but also multiply attack surfaces and blur the lines of trust. Both companies are embedding safeguards—ethical AI policies, governance boards, consolidated tech stacks, and employee upskilling—to ensure networks remain resilient. The message is clear: safeguarding telecom infrastructure from AI-fueled threats is not optional—it's critical to national and enterprise security in the emerging AI era.
