BT Deploys NB-IoT Network UK-Wide to Fuel Smart Cities & Industrial IoT
BT has officially rolled out a nationwide Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) network across the UK, now covering approximately 97% of the UK population and made available to business and public sector customers. The network aims to accelerate smart city deployments, utilities, agriculture, and other industries that rely on low-data, low-power connectivity.
NB-IoT is designed for devices that need to send small amounts of data, over long periods, with long battery life. BT points to use cases such as street lighting sensors, underground water leak detectors, environmental monitors, and infrastructure monitoring as early beneficiaries. Also noted are previous trials in agriculture, for example sensors monitoring haystack temperatures to prevent fires, and livestock gate sensors.
Chris Keone, Managing Director of BT's Division X, commented that many UK businesses are now recognising the value of IoT, and BT's NB-IoT offering provides connectivity solutions for monitors, sensors, and other smart devices with reliability and efficiency. He emphasised the role the network will play in enabling smart cities, reducing carbon emissions, and delivering automation in sectors like utilities and public infrastructure.
The NB-IoT rollout enables BT to support ecosystems where devices are deployed in hard-to-reach places where power consumption and connectivity costs matter. Long battery life is a highlight: sensors can operate for years without maintenance. BT expects this network to facilitate new business models, automation, cost savings, and operational efficiency in industries such as utilities, construction, public sector, and farming.
While the vision is ambitious, BT acknowledges that large-scale smart city infrastructures require alignment with local councils, planning, device standardisation, and security. The NB-IoT network sets the foundation; adoption will depend on the surrounding ecosystem—sensor manufacturers, regulations, data platforms, and integration. But by making the service available and covering nearly the whole population, BT has removed a major connectivity barrier.
