Major US Carriers Restore Network as California Wildfires Subside

California's wildfire situation is improving, with containment of key fires such as the Hughes, Palisades, and Eaton now exceeding 90%. In response, major U.S. wireless carriers—Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile—are continuing efforts to restore network connectivity in areas damaged by flames, windstorms, and power shutoffs.

Verizon has restored nearly 90% of its macro cell sites impacted by wildfires, wind events, and public safety power shutoffs. In harder-hit zones like Palisades, the carrier has deployed temporary mobile cell sites and is working to repair burned fiber infrastructure. Verizon is also offering free Wi-Fi and charging stations at shelters and select stores, and has waived various service fees for postpaid customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties for a set period.

AT&T reports its network in Greater Los Angeles is operating at about 99% of normal. Over 91% of affected cell sites have been reconstructed, and more than 96% of customer services—including internet and home connections—have been restored. The operator has deployed several temporary assets like "Flying COWs" (Cells on Wings), compact portable sites, and satellite-based portable units. AT&T is also prioritizing first responders by using FirstNet mobile units and deploying super-capacity mobile cell units.

T-Mobile has declared its network in Southern California largely back to normal operations, while still focusing temporary deployment in severely affected zones. The carrier has used various temporary assets—Satellite Cell on Wheels, backhaul fixes, and mobile command centers—to fill in coverage gaps. It is also offering waived fees for damaged or lost equipment, free Wi-Fi / charging at stores, and support for first responders via its priority services.

Overall, while the wildfires have caused widespread damage, these restoration efforts highlight the resilience and rapid response of the carriers. The combination of temporary mobile sites, repaired infrastructure, and community support is helping to reconnect people, restore services, and assist emergency efforts across the impacted regions.
