Deutsche Telekom Launches World's First Multi-Orbit IoT Roaming Service
Deutsche Telekom has announced the launch of what it describes as the world's first multi-orbit IoT roaming service, marking a significant step forward in global connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
The new solution integrates terrestrial mobile networks with satellite connectivity across both geostationary (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) systems, enabling IoT devices to remain connected even in areas without traditional network coverage.
By combining multiple connectivity layers, the service allows devices to automatically switch between mobile and satellite networks depending on availability. This ensures uninterrupted data transmission across a wide range of environments, including remote and hard-to-reach locations where connectivity has traditionally been limited.
The offering is based on NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies, making it compatible with existing IoT devices and infrastructure. It also aligns with industry standards for non-terrestrial networks (NTN), enabling broader scalability as satellite-based connectivity becomes more integrated into telecom ecosystems.
Deutsche Telekom is working with multiple satellite partners to deliver this capability. GEO coverage is provided through collaborations with companies such as Skylo, while LEO connectivity is supported by partners including Sateliot and OQ Technology.
The operator plans to further expand the service by incorporating additional satellite constellations, including future integration with Iridium's network, which will enhance global reach and reliability.
The introduction of multi-orbit IoT roaming addresses one of the key challenges in IoT deployment — maintaining reliable connectivity across diverse geographic areas. The solution is expected to benefit industries such as logistics, agriculture, maritime, utilities, and environmental monitoring, where devices often operate beyond the reach of traditional networks.
Industry observers note that this development reflects a broader trend toward convergence between terrestrial mobile networks and satellite infrastructure, positioning satellite IoT as an increasingly important component of global connectivity strategies.
