Ericsson & e& UAE Partner to Pioneer Early 6G Research and Tech Use Cases

Ericsson and UAE-based operator e& have formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing the early concepts and use cases for 6G networks. The agreement sets out to jointly explore how future network evolution could benefit from emerging technologies.

Under the MoU, Ericsson and e& will engage in technical discussions and joint research into what architectures, capabilities, and applications 6G might enable. These include integrating sensing technology, pervasive AI, network compute fabric, and trustworthy systems that fuse the digital and physical worlds.

Ekow Nelson, who heads the Global Customer Unit for e& at Ericsson Middle East & Africa, noted that while 5G still has much of its potential yet to be realised — especially as it becomes dominant post-2027 with 5G-Standalone and 5G Advanced — it's vital to start laying groundwork now. He added that the partnership with e& UAE aims to leverage shared expertise to advance 6G research in the UAE and the larger region.

Although the precise timeline, use-cases, and technical roadmap remain under discussion, the announcement highlights ambitions for a step-change in connectivity. Key themes expected to feature are ultra-low latency, immersive connectivity, integrated sensing, and more intelligent, adaptable networks.

While it may seem early to some, these kinds of partnerships are becoming more common as operators, vendors and governments try to anticipate what will be required for next-generation demands — from digital twins, metaverse-type experiences, to pervasive IoT and smart city deployments. Starting early allows all stakeholders to align on standards, regulatory requirements, and investment directions.
