Global Telco AI Alliance Launches Joint Venture for Telco-Specific Multilingual LLMs

A newly established joint venture by the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA) has been announced, bringing together five major telco groups — Singtel, Deutsche Telekom, e&, SK Telecom, and SoftBank — to develop Large Language Models (LLMs) specifically tuned for telecommunications use cases. The launch was officially unveiled at DTW24-Ignite in Copenhagen.

The objective is to build multilingual, telco-friendly LLMs that support user interactions (customer service, virtual assistants), domain knowledge, and communications contexts like billing or network status. These models are designed to understand telecom-specific intent better than general LLMs. They will support multiple languages, including English, German, Arabic, Bahasa, and Korean.

Each founding member will contribute equally to the investment required for the joint venture, with contributions covering working capital, model training, data sets, evaluation and deployment. The expected reach is large — collectively they serve about 1.3 billion users across more than 50 countries.

While the models are still in early stages, the alliance emphasises that telco-specific LLMs must comply with high standards of governance, data privacy, ethical AI, and environmental responsibility. The joint venture is subject to regulatory approvals.

Use-cases likely to emerge include AI chatbots with better understanding of carrier-specific services, automated support assistance, network incident diagnostics, usage insights, and other generative AI tools for both enterprise and consumer segments. For telcos, this signifies a shift: instead of adopting general purpose LLMs, they get tools built for telco environments.
