Proximus Enters 5-Year Cloud & AI Partnership with Microsoft Azure

Belgian telecom operator Proximus has signed a five-year strategic deal with Microsoft to migrate its critical platforms onto Azure Cloud, marking a big push into AI, cloud-native operations, and modernisation. Under the agreement, Proximus will leverage Microsoft's AI tools and infrastructure to accelerate the development of generative AI features in both customer service and internal operations.

An important element of the deal is that Proximus affiliates — BICS, Telesign, and Route Mobile — will play a key role. These units bring strengths in Communication Platform as a Service (CPaaS), Digital Identity (DI), and messaging/communications infrastructure. Proximus will integrate these into Azure-based systems, expanding its product offerings and scaling its communication/security services.

The cloud migration is expected to enable more flexible deployment of AI models (including generative AI), better scalability, and more resilience in operations. Microsoft will also help Proximus optimise its go-to-market strategy, especially for reselling or bundling its services in Belgium.

Guillaume Boutin, CEO of Proximus Group, has expressed enthusiasm about the deal, saying it pushes forward their international expansion goals and enhances customer experience through more advanced technologies. Proximus customers (residential and business) are likely to see improvements in connectivity, security, digital identity services, and seamless communications.

In addition to technology gains, the partnership reinforces Proximus' strategy around being more cloud-native, driving operational efficiencies, and maintaining competitiveness in AI, CPaaS, security, and digital transformation. With Microsoft's AI stack and Proximus's base of communications affiliates, the deal could set a strong example of cloud-AI co-innovation in European telcos.
