Singtel Rolls Out App-Based Network Slicing for 5G with URSP

Singtel has officially launched its app-based network slicing feature known as User Equipment Route Selection Policy (URSP), now generally available for enterprises in Singapore. The technology enables businesses to prioritize specific applications or users under demanding network conditions, helping ensure service reliability and performance.

URSP works together with Singtel's Application Detection Control and is integrated through a Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform. It empowers enterprise IT departments to assign extra bandwidth, lower latency, or priority routing to critical apps or user profiles when needed. The first devices to support the system include Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, Z Fold6, and Z Flip6, which are configured via Samsung's Knox Manage platform.

Ng Tian Chong, CEO of Singtel Singapore, describes URSP as a "game-changer," claiming that the customization it offers lets businesses reduce costs and improve customer engagement. Meanwhile, Samsung, collaborating with Singtel and Ericsson in testing, emphasized that the solution lets enterprises ensure that critical workloads remain performant, even during peak or congested times.

URSP's journey to general availability follows a live trial carried out with Samsung and Ericsson. One notable test used the Australian Open tennis tournament as a testbed, demonstrating how Singtel could sustain streaming quality under heavy load while allocating priority to selected applications.

The rollout is especially timely for businesses with hybrid workforces or mission-critical operations—where outages or performance degradation can carry serious drawbacks. With URSP, enterprises can define policies ensuring that essential applications such as collaboration tools, incident response systems, or disaster recovery get preferential treatment. That said, commercial adoption will depend on compatible devices, effective management tools, and clear enterprise policies.
