Telefónica Offers Perplexity Pro Free for Movistar Users in Spain

Telefónica has taken a fresh step in its collaboration with conversational AI search startup Perplexity by offering Perplexity Pro free for 12 months to its Movistar customers in Spain. The move is part of a larger deal that the Spanish telecom operator struck with the U.S.-based company, also covering markets such as Brazil and the UK.

Key features of Perplexity Pro that users will now have access to include the ability to upload files and images for AI-analysis, use follow-up questions to deepen understanding of replies, and receive content summaries. These enhancements are designed to make interactions more flexible, helpful and intelligent.

Telefónica first announced a global commercial agreement with Perplexity in late 2024. It also made an investment in the startup through its Wayra venture capital arm. In parallel, Telefónica has introduced a TV-focused version of Perplexity inside its Movistar Plus+ offering, letting users employ voice commands integrated into their television experience.

Aravind Srinivas, co-founder and CEO of Perplexity, described Telefónica as an "ideal first partner in Spain" for expanding their services. According to him, early user feedback for integration in voice control via Movistar Plus+ has been positive.

Telefónica isn't alone: several other telecom operators are extending Perplexity Pro privileges to their customers. Among them are SK Telecom and Singtel — each offering free one-year subscriptions — and Deutsche Telekom, which has tied Perplexity Pro to loyalty programs like Magenta Moments.

Overall, Telefónica's free-tier offering will help solidify Perplexity's position in the competitive AI search landscape, giving Spanish Movistar users early access to advanced features. For Telefónica, the move also supports its strategy of combining AI tools with its existing services to enhance user experience and engagement.
