VMO2's Massive Fibre Rollout Eyes UK Market Leadership and Real Competition

At Mobile World Congress 2025, VMO2's CTO Jeanie York laid out a bold transformation strategy centered on creating the UK's most competitive broadband ecosystem—built on rapid fibre expansion and AI-driven network intelligence.

VMO2 aims to extend its fibre footprint to 21 million UK homes by 2027. The rollout follows a successful run in 2024, where over 2 million homes were passed. The strategy leverages its own fibre to accelerate mobile site deployment, as well as fuel wholesale partnerships and fresh revenue streams.

York emphasized a shift toward data-informed capital allocation. By marrying customer experience data, network performance metrics, and external insights (e.g., from firms like Meta), VMO2 is guiding infrastructure rollouts with AI and LLMs—optimizing investment decisions by location and customer need. This enables real-time planning, including future-ready services like 5G slicing.

Beyond internal growth, VMO2 is preparing to wholesale its infrastructure to other ISPs—a move that could shake up the UK broadband landscape by directly challenging Openreach's dominance. This positions consumers to benefit from heightened competition.

The fibre expansion also streamlines operations—reducing architectural complexity, boosting network efficiency, and supporting environmental goals through lower energy use.
