VMO2 Scrambles to Improve Mobile Coverage at Haven Holiday Parks
Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has started deploying mobile network enhancements across a handful of Haven holiday parks just days before the UK's August bank holiday—a move considered notably delayed given peak staycation traffic.
The operator confirmed upgrades at four out of its planned 22 parks, with most enhancements expected to arrive either later this summer or even in early 2026. VMO2 declined to release a full schedule for the remaining rollouts, raising questions about its ability to meet holiday-season demand.
These efforts fall under VMO2's broader £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, aimed at strengthening coverage in high-demand coastal areas. With research showing that nearly 48% of Brits are taking "staycations" this year, the upgrades are well-timed—though perhaps too late to benefit many families who have likely already traveled.
Dr. Robert Joyce, O2's Director of Mobile Engineering, defended the strategy: "With more people holidaying in the UK, we're focusing upgrades on popular destinations to ensure connectivity for customers. Whether at Skegness, Berwick or Cleethorpes, we want users to stay connected." However, the timing has drawn criticism for missing the full impact window.
VMO2 is deploying these upgrades in partnership with infrastructure provider Freshwave, reinforcing its neutral host-led network expansion strategy. As VMO2 continues to face pressure on performance and public trust, completing these upgrades swiftly—and transparently—will be essential to improve its competitive standing and consumer confidence.
