Vodafone Offers Free eSIM Trials at UK Festivals as Device Adoption & Travel-Focused Use Surge
Vodafone UK is making a bold play to attract new customers and showcase eSIM technology by offering free eSIM trials at several of the UK's largest festivals. Attendees at events like Boardmasters, Glastonbury, British Summer Time Hyde Park, Kendal Calling, and Wimbledon were eligible for a seven-day trial loaded with 50 GB data, 500 minutes, and 500 texts. Although the promotion is restricted to festival sites via geofencing, users gain full access to Vodafone's network across the UK for the duration.
During Glastonbury, which draws over 200,000 visitors, around 15,000 people ordered an eSIM on site. Vodafone serves as the official connectivity partner at these festivals—a strategic advantage that enhances exposure for its eSIM offers.
This approach leverages several emerging trends: growing eSIM device support, increasing traveler demand for travel eSIMs and roaming bundles, the convenience of digital SIMs over physical SIM cards, and the rise of dual-SIM devices. According to GSMA, 2023 saw a record number — 231 new eSIM device/service launches globally.
Vodafone isn't limiting this to festivals. Though the initial trials are geofenced, the week‐long eSIM offer applies countrywide during the trial period. Vodafone has indicated strong reception and is considering broader roll-outs.
The rise in travel eSIMs is notable: Juniper Research projects travel eSIM users globally to grow from roughly 40 million this year to over 215 million by 2028. Fintechs, airlines, VPN providers and travel-focused platforms (e.g. Revolut, EasyJet's EasySim, NordVPN, etc.) are entering or expanding their offerings, representing strong competition for traditional operators.
Operators have expressed optimism over the potential of eSIMs. For example, DT (Deutsche Telekom) reported very low churn (0.8%) in Germany, citing that customer contracts, not SIM format, drive retention. Orange emphasized eSIMs help in retaining B2B and fleet customers, and operators see opportunity in devices that support dual lines, personal/travel use, and international roaming.
