Vodafone Idea, India's third-largest service provider by some metrics, has announced plans to raise approximately INR 450 billion (~US$5.4 billion) through a combination of equity and debt financing. The goal is to shore up its finances, expand 4G coverage, accelerate its 5G rollout, improve customer experience, and better compete in India's aggressive telecom market.

The split of the fundraise is: INR 200 billion (≈ US$2.4 billion) via equity or equity-linked instruments, and INR 250 billion (≈ US$3.0 billion) through debt. Vodafone Idea plans to convene a shareholder meeting on April 2, 2024 to approve the equity portion, with completion expected in the following quarter. The company has said its promoters (Vodafone Group and Aditya Birla Group) will participate in the equity raised, though it is not yet clear how much they will contribute.

Vodafone Idea claims its operating metrics are improving: its 4G subscriber base and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) have risen for 10 consecutive quarters. The company emphasizes that, despite constrained investment so far, it has managed to stabilize some performance indicators through efficiency and targeted upgrades. The planned capital influx is intended to revive investment momentum.

However, the road ahead is challenging. Vodafone Idea has lagged peers Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, both of whom launched 5G in October 2022 and have since achieved broad coverage and large subscriber gains. Vodafone Idea has yet to launch 5G commercially; the delay is largely attributed to its substantial debt load. The company's gross debt stood at about INR 2.14 trillion (~US$25.9 billion) as of December 2023, including deferred government dues (spectrum payments, revenue sharing). Subscriber losses and market share erosion have followed.

The fund-raising move is seen as essential for survival: without it, Vodafone Idea risks falling further behind in technology adoption, network quality, and customer retention. With elected funds, the company intends to commence 5G deployment in the next six to seven months, address spectrum obligations, and enhance its digital value-added offer.
