VodafoneThree Considers Pay-TV Bundling to Strengthen Broadband Portfolio
Following the completion of their £15 billion merger, Vodafone and Three—now operating as VodafoneThree—are reportedly exploring the launch of a Pay-TV service aimed at enhancing broadband and mobile packages.
According to early reports, discussions have begun with the intent to bundle traditional broadcast channels alongside popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. The strategy mirrors moves by rivals such as Virgin Media O2 and BT/EE, who already offer integrated TV and broadband bundles.
Vodafone's experience in European markets supports this direction. In Germany and the Netherlands, the telco has successfully offered converged services, while in the UK it has intermittently included Apple TV devices in select packages.
However, launching a new TV service in the UK presents notable challenges. Consumer viewing habits continue to shift away from traditional set-top boxes as most smart TVs now come pre-installed with streaming apps. Analysts argue that without strong content bundles or competitive pricing, gaining traction in a saturated market will be difficult.
The timing of this initiative is significant. With the merger now approved and VodafoneThree poised to become the UK's largest mobile operator—serving nearly 27 million customers—the company may view Pay-TV as a way to increase customer stickiness and enhance revenue per user amid fierce competition within fixed broadband and mobile sectors.
Currently at a conceptual stage, no formal launch decision has been made. Yet, VodafoneThree's large-scale infrastructure, combined with content partnerships and bundling incentives, could make this a formidable competitor in the UK pay-TV market—provided they deliver value and convenience better than the alternatives.
